There are many theories about the cause of a herniated disc. However none of them are consistant. Research studies have been done to healthy discs. They found that the torque to rupture a disc that is healthy is well over ONE-THOUSAND pounds. The bones in the cadaver studies would usually break first. Secondly researchers have done random MRI studies on people that have had no symptoms at all and had never sought care for any kind of back pain. Usually in one hundred cases about forty to sixty percent of the non pain patients had some form of a herniated disc in their spine. So the question becomes, how does a herinated disc develope if a sever injury is not in the history. We propose this therory. The cranial nerve that is associated with the involved disc has dissociated. This causes the sensory nervous system to function abnormally. The brain then does not communicate properly with the disc tissue and over time the disc will weaken. The typical case of this happening is when a person bends over to pick up a pencil and can not straighten back up. they are in intense pain. Cold laser therapy to the sensory nervous system has clinically shown in our practice to greatly reduce the pain associated with this condition and often will bring about a quick healing response. If the disc injury is too sever, and their is lose of bladder or bowell or muscle tone loss, they need immediate surgury to prevent furthur complications with their health. The new advanced surgical procedures of today are excellent in treating the advanced cases.
